Recreational and awareness activity to save a species that in wildness falls to 65% in less than last 20 years.
This Saturday, August 1st, Oasis Park celebrates the christening of the past two baby giraffes in the zoo. Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is the image of Africa in the whole world, it's one of the three animal species more identified with Africa along with elephant and hippopotamus. They live in 21 countries and in 7 of them are already extinct.
In 1998 the total number estimated by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) was 140,000 individuals and only 15 years later, in 2013 fewer than 80,000 individuals. Currently there are nine recognized subspecies of giraffe in Africa and each of them live in different geographic areas of the continent.
Giraffes are also important because they cause changes in habitat and landscape. They open areas and promote the growth of new forage for themselves and other wildlife which makes them critical to the conservation of the planet's biodiversity agents.
Some of the giraffe subspecies have very small populations and are endangered. One of them is living in Oasis Park Fuerteventura: Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis).
Oasis Park Fuerteventura is committed to raising awareness and the environment. So this Saturday we want to share with our visitors the commitment to the conservation of this emblematic species in Africa. So we've prepared a christening party encompassed a series of activities for children as a giraffe mask workshop; a christening cake, draw multiple gifts, African rhythms by the chanting "Al Son de Todos", acrobatic dances by the dance company Datana, creative workshop decorating the christening cake, great color powders in the air and Special lecture on this species. Children will know them playing and become aware of the need to preserve them.
In addition, all Saturday's visitors will have the opportunity to collaborate in the decoration of the great cake to be introduced in the christening facilities. We recommend to come dressed on white to participate in the parade of colored powders singing African rhythm.
