The college of La Lajita with the education department from Oasis Park Fuerteventura, held today, 21 May, the European Natura 2000 Day, under the slogan "The simple flap of a butterfly can change the world". It intends all citizens to know the richness of the many protected areas of more than 27,000 locations in Europe, which includes this big initiative.
The event took place at Oasis Park Fuerteventura where children enjoyed a visit to the park with explanations from a team of biologists from the Department of Education. But what makes this visit especially is they could see up close the facilities where our family of sea lions live, and with their caregivers, thay culd learn about this fascinating species.
To honor the theme of this year's Natura 2000, all them raised their arms making a butterfly with their hands, while holding the banner with # Natura2000Day. Coco, the friendliest sea lion of Oasis Park Fuerteventura, didn't want to miss the chance to go out with them, and participate in the picture!
The European Habitats Directive, that allowed the creation of the Natura 2000 which protects all the natural areas in the European Union, was adopted 23 years ago. In Fuerteventura, more than half the surface of the island belongs to the Natura 2000, hosting rich flora and fauna, but also geological. Therefore, we have assumed the responsibility for the conservation of the environment and biodiversity.
We encourage everyone to participate with your own gesture, which will help to conserve and protect a European natural environment. Companies, organizations, schools and even individuals are invited to collaborate, sharing the philosophy of Natura 2000: "Every small gesture has great power."
