We're in luck! Emolo, our 8 year old female giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), became mother yesterday morning. And for us it’s certainly a joy to say that everything is running smoothly!
Emolo was born in a zoo in Hungary with a congenital problem in his right leg. It’s a very cold place, and it was very difficult for the veterinary treatment of its injury. For the recovery of injuries of this type, they need to exercise and make special movements of the joints. But with low temperatures Emolo wasn’t encouraged to leave the indoor facilities, where she always stood against the cold.
From Oasis Park Fuerteventura we were contacting the center to take two female giraffes, and seeing how much trouble they had with Emolo, they decided that the best thing for her was also moved to our facilities together with the other two. The three sisters, who wore together from small, found its new permanent home at Oasis Park Fuerteventura.
Here we offer great weather, just as they would in nature, so they have no problem to adapt. And besides, they have very large outer space where they can walk and exercise in group.
Emolo never received any medical training, which would have provided access to veterinarians to settle her hooves, which is what she really need to be ok. One possibility would be to cut the hoof directly, but the risk of break the ligaments that hold the joint is very high. On the other hand, the veterinary team with specialists in these animals, assessed the risks of anesthesia. The conclusion is that there are high chances of cardiac arrest or cause a spinal cord injury, and considering that after surgery the problem won’t be solved, it’s completely ruled out the possibility of sleep Emolo to operate her.
For this reason, we had chosen the training. A longer-term treatment but more safe and effective. This method will provide caregivers and veterinarians fix the hoof and improve its normal position the damaged joint. The training is slow but working every day with patience and love, we will make Emolo recover completely.
About 9 months ago we realized that she was pregnant, which made us very happy because the fact that she was receptive to the male indicated that her mood was very good. But by contrast, the injury worsened greatly concerned specialists Oasis Park Fuerteventura. Weight gain leading to a pregnancy, significantly damaged the joint and we were afraid that the damage was irreversible.
This situation made the entire team of Oasis Park Fuerteventura start to work. In record time we built a contiguous facility to the rest of giraffes to separate her. At the same time, the training sessions became our priority, and with positive reinforcement and a target she gradually approached us and gave us her hoof. The ultimate goal is to allow us to file them and if necessary, attach orthopedic boots similar to those used for horses.
And amid all our efforts and concern, Emolo has given us a joy. Seeking privacy of the night, she gave birth to this small male giraffe, which still has no name!
Caregivers, when they went out late afternoon or suspected that when they returned in the morning would find this wonderful surprise. Emolo gave no sign of labor! When they arrived yesterday morning they could’ot believe it, because the baby was already walking and sucking.
This champion who weighed more than 40 kg and is about 2 m high, is one more of the family and spend the day eating and sleeping. Veterinarians say that as an adult, will measure more than 6 m weighing more than a ton and a half.
We invite you not to miss this unique show that only nature can offer. The small and brave mother, Emolo, await you in Oasis Park Fuerteventura.
Help us to name this baby! Are you going to lose this spectacle?
