The effect of the destruction of the ozone layer over the Canary Islands

Wednesday, 16 September, 2015

Today, September 16, we celebrate the World Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, and all the inhabitants of the Earth must unite our voices in a day like this.

In Oasis Park Fuerteventura we know that in every corner of our planet the effects of global warming, a phenomenon that far from being a myth, becomes palpable when it's able to change the habits and behavior of wildlife that inhabit this world.

The behavioral patterns of our animals are governed on the basis of a unique and universal premise: survival. That is why many species perform lengthy migrations in order to find the right places where feeding, breeding or teach their offspring.

But the impending change in climatic conditions affect the time they perform these routes, as well as their trajectories are modified as a result of the invasion of ecosystems by human being.

Our footprint is reflected in every corner of the planet, and in particular, on the coast of the Canary Islands, a special visitor, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), lives with increasing frequency in our area as a result of increased warmth our Atlantic waters. The coast of the Canary Islands has become a favorite area to serve as ecological niche to this huge elasmobranch of about 12m, normally inhabited warmer waters. But take it easy, because fortunately it feeds on phytoplankton!

Oasis Park Fuerteventura doesn's want sharks off the coast of the Canary Islands... It's only that we we prefer each species inhabit the place they do. Preserve the ozone layer means keep the temperature of our planet, and thus help to maintain the balance of our ecosystems.

How can you help?

It's much easier than you think. Start making more responsible use means of transport, using public services, thus reducing the emission of gases into our atmosphere. Also, you can include little things in your daily routine and avoid consuming products that satisfied CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), control the operation of refrigerating appliances you have at home (freezer, air conditioning) or use bulbs or energy-efficient appliances. Besides helping your pocket, you'll help your planet!

The Oasis Park Fuerteventura team encourage you to complete each day with your daily habits, so you will contribute to each species to be in the place where should be.

Happy World Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer!
